Traders at the Suame Post Office Market in the Ashanti Region are reeling from heavy losses after a devastating late-night fire destroyed more than 100 shops.

The blaze, which broke out around midnight on Tuesday, swept through the market and reduced shops and goods worth millions of cedis to ashes.

Eyewitnesses reported that gas cylinders stored in the market exploded, intensifying the spread of the flames.

Distraught traders could only watch helplessly as the inferno consumed their livelihoods. Some nearby residents, in a desperate attempt to help, forced open several shops to salvage items before the fire could engulf them.

Many traders and residents accused the Ghana National Fire Service of arriving late to the scene, by which time much of the market had already been gutted.

“We called for help earlier, but the fire service came late. By then, everything was gone,” a distressed eyewitness recounted.

Fortunately, no casualties have been recorded. The Fire Service has since begun preliminary investigations into the cause of the incident. According to their initial assessment, 25 out of 44 shops were destroyed, along with 192 sheds.
