The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has provided financial assistance amounting to GH₵106,000 to traders and residents affected by the recent fire outbreak at the Accra Central Police Barracks Trading Area in Tudu.

A total of 106 victims each received GH₵1,000 during a presentation ceremony held at the AMA headquarters on Thursday.

The intervention follows a visit by the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, to the affected area shortly after the incident, where he assessed the extent of the damage and interacted with victims whose businesses, goods and personal belongings were destroyed by the fire.

Speaking at the event, Mr Allotey said the support was intended to provide immediate relief to those affected as they work to rebuild their lives and livelihoods. While acknowledging that the amount may not fully compensate for the losses incurred, he expressed hope that it would ease some of the difficulties facing the victims.

The Mayor explained that his earlier visit to the scene was undertaken on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, and the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

He assured beneficiaries that government remained committed to supporting them and would consider additional interventions once a comprehensive assessment report on the disaster had been completed.

Mr Allotey also urged victims and members of the public to be honest throughout the distribution process, stressing that support should reach only those who were genuinely affected by the fire.

He encouraged individuals who were unable to attend the engagement to communicate their concerns through their community leaders to ensure their details are captured for any future assistance programmes.

The Mayor further raised concerns about unsafe electrical installations and other hazardous conditions observed at the site, warning that such practices increase the risk of future fire outbreaks if not addressed.

According to him, the Assembly has consistently encouraged traders to cooperate with efforts to reorganise and redevelop trading areas to improve safety standards and minimise the occurrence of similar disasters.

“The country can only be fixed when citizens cooperate with authorities and conduct themselves responsibly, especially during difficult moments,” he stated.

Some beneficiaries expressed appreciation to the government and the AMA for the timely support but appealed for additional assistance to help them restore their businesses and provide for their families.
