GFA ExCo member casts doubt on Otto Addo’s Black Stars coaching return
Fredrick Acheampong, a member of the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council, has raised doubts about the widespread reports suggesting Otto Addo as the leading candidate for the Black Stars coaching position.
The Black Stars have been actively seeking a permanent coach following the dismissal of Chris Hughton and his technical team after a disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
In response, the GFA formed a committee to spearhead the selection process, receiving numerous applications for the role.
Recent media reports have heavily speculated on Otto Addo’s return to the position, but Acheampong clarified that the ultimate decision lies with the GFA Executive Council, not the search committee.
“The appointment of the coach does not even stop with the search committee.
This is from our level (The Executive Committee). The decision we made was that the search committee should draw up a shortlist of three coaches, so I was surprised to hear that Otto Addo is leading the race, as if the search committee is in charge of appointing a coach,” Acheampong clarified on Kessben FM.
He further elaborated that the search committee’s role is to present three coaching candidates to the Executive Council for thorough discussions and evaluations before a final decision is reached.
Otto Addo, currently part of Borussia Dortmund’s coaching staff, previously served as the head coach of the Black Stars in 2022.
While he successfully guided Ghana to qualification for the 2022 World Cup, the team exited the tournament during the group stage under his leadership.
