GFA President Kurt Okraku makes solemn donation at Asantehemaa’s funeral

Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku and vice president, Mr Mark Addo led the Ghana football delegation to make a solemn donation to the Asante Kingdom for the passing of the late Asantehemaa.
Kurt Okraku’s donation to the final funeral rites of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, is a powerful gesture of cultural reverence and national unity. His presentation of GH₵50,000, bottles of schnapps, and assorted drinks at the solemn ceremony in Kumasi reflects not only personal respect but also the Ghana Football Association’s deep acknowledgment of the Ashanti Kingdom’s enduring legacy.

The Asantehemaa, revered for her wisdom and leadership, held a pivotal role in the Ashanti traditional hierarchy. Her passing earlier this year marked the end of an era, and the grandeur of her funeral—known as Doteyie in Asante customs—has drawn dignitaries, traditional rulers, and citizens from all walks of life. The final rites included a royal procession, symbolic rituals, and her interment at the Baamu Royal Mausoleum in Breman.
Okraku’s presence and donation were warmly received by the Manhyia Palace, reinforcing the bond between Ghana’s sporting leadership and its cultural institutions. It’s a reminder that football, beyond the pitch, can be a bridge between generations, traditions, and communities.
