Former Black Stars midfielder Emmanuel Agyemang Badu says fans should brace for an exciting season as the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League kicks off this weekend.

The campaign opens tonight at the Accra Sports Stadium, where Hearts of Oak will host newly promoted Hohoe United in the curtain-raiser. The highly anticipated clash will be graced by President John Dramani Mahama, who is expected to attend the season opener.

Defending champions Bibiani Goldstars begin their title defense on Saturday with a tough fixture against Bechem United, while other top-flight sides are set to light up stadiums across the country over the weekend.

Speaking ahead of the kickoff, Agyemang Badu tipped the season to be highly competitive, citing increased cash incentives and a significant rise in prize money for the eventual winners as major boosts.

“The Ghana Premier League will be interesting this season. A lot of things have changed, particularly the cash incentives for clubs and the change in coaches. There are new coaches in the league, and we will be looking at how they can succeed at their various clubs,” he told reporters.

Bibiani Goldstars made history last season, dethroning Samartex to win their first-ever league title. With fresh managerial appointments, improved welfare, and heightened stakes, the 2025/26 campaign promises to be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory.
