Ghana used over-aged players to win FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1991 – Alex Opoku

Age cheating is an age old suspicion in football with the accusing fingers more often than not pointed in the direction of African and South American countries where proper records are not kept.
More often than not these two continents have been very successful when it comes to the various FIFA under age competitions.
With Africa and their South American counterparts out shining the rest of the world, this led to the introduction of the Magnetic Resonance Imagining (MRI) but that has its flaws as still over aged players are smuggled into the various youth tournaments.
Ghana won theKofi Mbeah, Mohammed Gargo, sweeper Isaac Asare, and ace marksman Nii Odartey Lamptey, who scored four goals which was hosted in Italy beating Spain in the finals.
A member of the team Alexander Opoku aka Nana Opoku who played for BA United then has admitted that himself and most of his teammates were over aged.
In his case he admits that he is about three to four years older than his real age and goes on to add that it was not only Ghana that did it as Brazil and some other countries also paraded over aged players.
Speaking in an interview with Accra based Happy Fm, Nana Opoku now turned a Pastor says he does not actually know his real age since his mother is an illiterate.
Ghana paraded the likes of Kofi Mbeah, Mohammed Gargo, sweeper Isaac Asare, and ace marksman Nii Odartey Lamptey, who scored four goals at the tournament.
