Haaland double eliminates Brazil from 2026 World Cup to send Norway into quarter-finals
Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway stunned Brazil 2-1 to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 Fifa World Cup.
The Manchester City forward struck in the 80th minute before adding a second 10 minutes later, putting Norway on course for one of the biggest results in the country’s football history.
Brazil, who had struggled to break down a disciplined Norwegian defence for much of the match, pulled a goal back through Neymar in the 90+11th minute of added time.
But it proved too late to prevent the five-time world champions from being eliminated in the last 16.
Haaland’s first goal came after Norway had absorbed long periods of Brazilian pressure. The striker found space in the area and finished clinically to give his side a surprise lead.
Brazil pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Norway struck again late on when Haaland completed his brace, sparking celebrations among the Norwegian players and supporters.
Neymar’s late goal briefly raised hopes of an unlikely comeback, but Norway held on through the final moments to secure a famous victory.
The two goals take Haaland’s tally at the tournament to seven, placing him among the leading scorers at the 2026 World Cup alongside players including Kylian Mbappé and Lionel Messi.
He has now scored in 14 consecutive competitive matches for Norway and becomes the first European player since Christian Vieri in 1998 to score in each of his first four World Cup appearances.
Norway will face either England or Mexico in the quarter-finals.
