International investigators arrive to probe fatal helicopter crash

Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has confirmed the arrival of international aviation experts in the region to support investigations into the fatal military helicopter crash that occurred on August 6, 2025.
The crash, which took place in the Dampia Range Forest Reserve near Brofoyedru-Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofrom District, claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.
Dr. Amoakohene stated that investigators have been directed to engage key stakeholders to facilitate a thorough and credible probe. He expressed optimism that the collaboration between international and local teams will uncover the cause of the tragedy and help prevent future incidents.
In a related development, the Regional Minister also supported the Inspector General of Police’s decision to withdraw the task force previously deployed to enforce environmental regulations in mining communities.
While acknowledging the task force’s impact in fighting illegal mining (galamsey), Dr. Amoakohene criticised its approach, which he said excluded vital local stakeholders such as MMDCEs, regional authorities, and traditional leaders.
He stated that security and enforcement operations must not be centralised. However, effective governance, especially at the community level, depends on cooperation, trust, and inclusiveness.
He added that ongoing reforms would allow for stronger integration of local structures, ensuring community participation and ownership in the fight against environmental degradation.
