The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology has named Professor Christian Agyare as its next Vice-Chancellor, with his four-year tenure set to begin on August 1, 2026.

The appointment was made public through an official statement from the university’s Registrar, Benjamin B. Owusu, following the University Council’s 292nd Special Meeting held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.

The Council approved the findings and recommendation of a Search Committee constituted to identify a suitable candidate for the role before formally confirming Professor Agyare’s selection.

A Professor of Pharmaceutics and current Provost of KNUST’s College of Health Sciences, Professor Agyare brings considerable academic and administrative experience to the position.

He is widely regarded within research and higher education circles for his contributions to pharmaceutical sciences and institutional leadership.

His term is expected to run until July 31, 2030.

He takes over from Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, whose tenure draws to a close in July 2026. Professor Dickson carved her place in history in 2020 as the first woman ever appointed to lead KNUST, a milestone that defined the character of her tenure alongside notable achievements in research output, infrastructure expansion, international collaborations, and digital advancement.

The transition attracted public scrutiny in recent weeks amid allegations of political meddling in the selection process.

The university firmly dismissed the claims, maintaining that the exercise was handled with full transparency and in strict accordance with established institutional procedures.

Professor Agyare’s appointment is widely seen as the beginning of a new chapter for one of Ghana’s foremost public universities.
