Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that President John Dramani Mahama is preparing to launch a bold and uncompromising campaign against illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey.

The announcement comes in the wake of the August 6 military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District, which claimed the lives of eight individuals, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, both of whom had been instrumental in the fight against illegal mining.

Speaking to journalists on Thursday, August 14, Mr. Ablakwa said the President had expressed a firm resolve to intensify the anti-galamsey fight like never before.

“I can confirm to you that you are going to see a fight that has never been witnessed before in this country. President Mahama is going to lead a very ruthless and relentless fight against galamsey.”

According to Mr. Ablakwa, a recent cabinet meeting made it clear that the government would treat illegal mining as a national emergency, vowing to confront it with full force.

“He didn’t mince his words. We had a brief cabinet meeting and the President was very clear that he would lead a war we have never seen before to stop this existential threat confronting us,” he stated.

He indicated that the upcoming measures would represent a new and aggressive phase in the government’s efforts to protect the environment, preserve Ghana’s water bodies, and defend communities most affected by illegal mining activities.
