Mahama to swear in Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice today

President John Dramani Mahama will today, Monday, November 17, 2025, swear in Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Chief Justice, following Parliament’s recent approval of his nomination.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, nominated by President Mahama on September 23, was endorsed for what the President described as his “wealth of experience and long service on the Bench,” having risen through the High Court, Court of Appeal, and the Supreme Court.
He has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, after the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on November 10, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie pledged an open-door, bipartisan approach to judicial administration and reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening judicial independence and expanding access to justice.
Parliament confirmed his nomination on November 13 with 163 votes in favour and 69 against, clearing the way for his official swearing-in today.
