The Media Coalition for Good Governance (MCGG) has pushed back against allegations made by some Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) regarding operations at Ghana’s ports, insisting that the claims are not supported by credible evidence.

Addressing a press conference, MCGG Convener Kwadwo Baffour Atuahene emphasized the need for discussions on port reforms to be grounded in facts, data and objective analysis rather than speculation.

He acknowledged that, like ports across the world, Ghana’s ports face operational challenges and require ongoing improvements in key areas, including customs administration, shipping logistics, terminal operations and health surveillance systems.

Mr Atuahene stated that the coalition remains supportive of initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency, transparency and infrastructure development at the country’s ports. However, he cautioned that meaningful reforms can only be achieved through evidence-based assessments and constructive engagement.

While recognising the important role CSOs play in promoting transparency and accountability, he urged such organisations to ensure that their public statements are accurate, balanced and backed by verifiable facts.

According to him, allegations that are not supported by evidence risk eroding public confidence in critical national institutions and could divert attention from efforts to strengthen Ghana’s trade facilitation and health security frameworks.

His remarks come in the wake of concerns raised by some civil society groups over port disinfection services and the operation of the Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS).

The coalition called on all stakeholders, including policymakers, industry players and civil society groups, to prioritise fact-based dialogue and practical solutions that will contribute to improving port operations and advancing national development objectives.
