Mills would have been outraged by galamsey, political partisanship- Charlotte Osei

Former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei, has expressed her deep sorrow that the late President John Evans Atta Mills would have been profoundly disheartened by the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining and the increasing levels of toxic partisanship in Ghana’s political landscape.
In her keynote address at the 13th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture of the late president on Tuesday, July 22, Osei reflected on how current issues starkly contrast with the values and principles President Mills championed during his time in office.
“As we honour Prof’s memory, we must also commit ourselves to continue his work. This is not just a responsibility of those who knew him personally, but of all Ghanaians and Africans who shared his vision of a better future.
Mrs. Osei shared her concerns, wondering how the late president would have responded to the ongoing challenges.
She went on to describe President Mills as a man of peace, dignity, and humility, whose enduring legacy should serve as a call to action for national unity, responsible governance, and sustainable development.
Despite these concerns, she acknowledged some positive strides that would have pleased the late president. She noted that Mills would have been proud of the continued strength of his family and the notable achievements of his former students and mentees, who are now making an impact in various sectors.
“Prof would also be happy that his wife and family are still thriving. He would be pleased that many of his learners and mentees are leading lights in business, the legislature, and the executive. I think he would be happy that the party for which he made so much sacrifice is back in power, and happy that we have the first female Vice President,” she said.
