Paul Scholes Hails ‘Sensational’ Wayne Rooney After He Scores Record Equalling Goal Against Reading
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has heaped praise on Wayne Rooney after the striker equalled Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goalscoring record during the Red Devils 4-0 win over Reading in the FA cup third round.
Rooney had been stuck on 248 goals for over a month and has struggled to find the record equalling 249th strike to match the United club record set by the legendary Sir Bobby Charlton.
However, on his return from injury, the striker needed just six minutes to find the net against the Royals and equal the record, although he did miss a number of chances thereafter to score the all important 250th goal.
Whilst that moment will surely come in the next few weeks, Rooney has been receiving widespread praise for his achievements, and none more so than from his former teammate, Paul Scholes, who has lauded the 31-year-old’s record at Old Trafford.
Scholes told BT Sport after United’s resounding win over Reading (as quoted by the Mirror): “He’s been a sensational footballer for this football club and won many trophies.

“The thing that impresses me the most is that he’s been here for so long but the hunger and desire is still there.
“He’s scored some amazing goals in his time; his volleys, his strikes from outside the box, little clever dinks, little clever chips, he’s scored a goal from the halfway line – he’s been sensational for this football club.”

With United now set to host Hull City (EFL Cup) and Liverpool (Premier League) in the next seven days, Scholes couldn’t resist revealing which match he would prefer Rooney to break the record in.
He added: “Let’s hope he breaks that record… against Liverpool.”
