Police to reinforce security during counting in Akwatia – IGP
Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured voters and stakeholders that the Ghana Police Service is fully equipped to maintain peace throughout the Akwatia by-election especially during the vote counting and collation phase.
During a media briefing on Tuesday, September 2, while touring the constituency to assess security operations, Dr. Yohuno reaffirmed the police’s commitment to a smooth electoral process.
“It will be well. You have seen it already and that is how it will be. And when it gets to counting, you will see that more reinforcement will come in. The robust ones will also come,” he said.
His remarks follow reports of minor scuffles at some polling centres earlier in the day.
However, the IGP stated that the situation remains largely under control, praising the professionalism and discipline of officers on the ground.
The Akwatia by-election — triggered by the death of the sitting Member of Parliament is underway at 119 polling stations, with over 50,000 voters expected to participate. Security has been visibly heightened in hotspots like Wenchi and Vawaso to deter any disruptions.
The Electoral Commission is set to begin counting shortly after polls close, with official results expected later tonight.
