Proposal to extend presidential term was made by clubs and not GFA – Prosper Harrison Addo

Ghana Football Association (GFA) General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo, has clarified that the proposal to extend the GFA presidential term limit did not originate from the Association’s leadership but rather from its member bodies, including clubs and regional football authorities.
This follows growing public debate surrounding a recommendation by the GFA Statutes Review Committee to extend the presidential term from two terms to three. The proposal is set to be a major agenda item at the 31st GFA Ordinary Congress, scheduled for August 12, 2025, at the Ghanaman Centre of Excellence in Prampram.
Speaking on Asempa FM, Harrison Addo addressed speculation that the proposed amendment was tailored to benefit current GFA President Kurt Okraku, who could potentially seek a third term if the new statute is approved.
“The decision to extend the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidential term in office was proposed by clubs, RAG [Regional Associations’ Group] leadership, and other bodies that are all members of Congress,” Harrison Addo explained.
“The decision was not made by the GFA itself, and this proposal to extend the mandate of the president was made three years ago.”
The recommendation stems from a broader statutory review initiated by the GFA over three years ago, aimed at aligning its governance framework with global standards. Notably, FIFA and CAF allow for three-term presidencies, while the GFA President is currently limited to two terms—unlike other Executive Council members, who may serve up to three.
The GFA has already received formal approval from FIFA to move forward with the proposal, clearing the way for Congress to deliberate and vote on it in August
Under Article 34 of the GFA Statutes, any amendment must be adopted by at least three-quarters of voting delegates present at Congress.
With member associations driving the proposal and FIFA’s green light secured, all eyes are now on Congress to decide the future leadership structure of Ghana football.
