Ramadan Sobhi wins Afcon U-23 Nations Cup for Egypt
Ramadan Sobhi handed Egypt their first ever African U-23 Championship trophy Friday night as he scored the winner in extra time against a spirited Ivory Coast team.
The host nation took the lead in the game through full back Karim El-Eraky in the 37th minute, El-Eraky scored the goal but it owed everything to the skill and hard work of Ramadan Sobhi who dribbled on the left flank and cut back for the full back to drill a first time shot into the net for one nil.
Six minuted later the Ivorians nearly level but for the foot of the goal post as Gnaka’s shot hit the post and went wide.
Traore should have done better in the 75th minute when he was cleanly sent through on goal after a nice move from his teammate but he could only hit his shot wide when he had goalkeeper Mohammed Sobhy at his mercy.
Deep into injury time the Ivorians pulled parity with a clever free kick routine, Mohamed Outtara received the ball up the right flank and sent a low cross towards Boubakar Doumbia, who deftly glided past the despairing dive of goalkeeper Sobhy.
Dao should have won it for the Ivorians when one on one with Sobhy after the goalkeeper needlessly fluffed a fierce shot that was going wide into his path.
The game went into extra time and with five minutes to end proceedings the mercurial Ramadan Sobhi won it for the host nation after a fierce drive Ahmed Yasser Rayan was parried into his path to clinch the winner and send the stadium into frenzy.
