The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in consultation with the Ministry of the Interior, has ordered the closure of the Ho Central Mosque for two weeks, effective Thursday, January 1, 2026, due to a leadership dispute within the Muslim community.
In a statement signed by Volta Regional Minister James Gunu on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, REGSEC said the decision was taken to maintain peace and security following tensions arising from rival claims to the position of Regional Chief Imam.
The council has also declared the affected area a crime scene to allow for investigations until the matter is resolved.
The decision follows an emergency REGSEC meeting held on Monday, December 29, 2025, to assess the situation. Authorities say the temporary closure is intended to create a calm and neutral atmosphere to support mediation efforts among the parties involved.
REGSEC has urged all factions to exercise restraint and embrace dialogue, emphasising that the safety of worshippers, the sanctity of the mosque and unity within the Muslim community remain paramount.
