Senior Athletics Championships: Alex Amankwah reaches 800m final

Ghanaian middle-distance runner Alex Amankwah has qualified for the men’s 800m final at the 2026 Senior Athletics Championships after a determined performance on the opening day of competition.
Amankwah became the first athlete representing the host nation to secure a place in a final, providing an early boost for local supporters at the championships.
The US-based runner finished third in his heat in a tightly contested race. Although only the top two athletes earned automatic qualification, his time was strong enough to see him advance as one of the fastest losers across all heats.
His qualification has been welcomed by fans and athletics officials, with hopes rising for a strong showing in the final.
Amankwah, who has steadily built a reputation in middle-distance running through his performances both locally and abroad, now carries Ghana’s hopes in one of the competition’s most competitive events.
The men’s 800m final is scheduled to take place at 4:15pm on Wednesday, 13 May.
