Struggling English Premier League side Newcastle United have been knocked back in their pursuit of Ghana and Southampton center back Salisu Mohammed.

The Magpies who are being backed by filter riches of Saudi Arabia have been in the market for a quality center back to shore up their leaky defense and help keep them in the Premier League.

Newcastle United have been locked in talks with Sevilla for 28 year old Brazilian center back Diego Carlos but the Spanish club are reluctant to let go off their prized asset despite the money on offer.

According to journalist Luke Edwards, the Magpies recently made enquiries for the services of the Southampton defender but their overtures was quickly blocked by the South Coast club as the defender is a no go for them.

Mohammed Salisu joined the saints from Spanish side Real Valladolid in the summer of 2021, for a reported £11 million and has since not looked back as he has been very consistent for the club.

Last Saturday was undoubtedly one of his finest displays for Southampton in their 1-1 draw against league champions Manchester City as he put up a man of the match display.

He made the most clearances (6) and most interceptions (2), and did not commit a single foul. He also won all of his duels and tackles.

It was a defensive masterclass from the 22-year-old. There will undoubtedly be quite a few clubs out there now keeping a close eye on his development after that particular outing.

The Ghana rebel has made 39 appearances for Southampton since joining the club and will set his sights on bigger clubs if his performance should continue.
