Sports Minister Kofi Adams condemns violence at Basake Holy Stars vs Nations FC match

Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has strongly condemned the violence that marred a Ghana Premier League Matchweek 33 clash at the Ampain AAK II Sports Arena over the weekend.
The chaos erupted after Nations FC fiercely contested a second controversial penalty awarded to the home side, bringing the match to a premature halt. The confrontation adds to a growing list of violent incidents undermining the integrity of Ghanaian football, particularly in the lower tiers.
Speaking to Sporty FM, Minister Adams confirmed he had been briefed on the situation and described the scenes as “unfortunate,” noting that investigations by relevant authorities are ongoing.
“It is unfortunate that we continue to have such situations,” he said. “But what must be done is to have proper education of the club owners, even before the fans.”
Adams did not mince words in his critique of football administration, blaming poor leadership among some club owners and managers for the persistent problems.
“Some club managers are clueless about what football is all about. Their focus on personal prestige or short-term gain is harming the game,” he stressed.
He argued that poor officiating, inadequate crowd control, and the win-at-all-costs mentality are fueling the volatile matchday atmosphere, and warned that Ghana cannot afford to let unqualified individuals run football clubs.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has since launched a formal investigation into the events at Ampain. Meanwhile, stakeholders and observers are calling for urgent reforms in officiating standards, stadium security, and club governance to protect the credibility of the local game.
