Tehran embassy shut as Ghana moves to evacuate citizens – Ablakwa

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced the immediate evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from Iran, citing the protection of lives amid growing hostilities between Iran and Israel.
In a statement shared via social media on Monday, June 16, Mr. Ablakwa said the move is a proactive measure by the Mahama administration to safeguard Ghanaians in the region.
“The Mahama Administration has, in the interest of the protection of Ghanaian lives, decided to immediately evacuate Ghanaians living in Iran following an escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
As part of the emergency response, Ghana’s embassy in Tehran has been shut down with immediate effect to ensure the safety of diplomatic personnel.
The evacuation, which will be carried out via Iran’s land borders, will include all Ghanaian citizens in the country, diplomats, students, professionals, and other residents.
Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the safety of Ghanaians abroad.
He also noted that the government is closely monitoring developments in the region, and every Ghanaian, regardless of where they are, remains a priority.
“In the interim, we have instructed that embassy operations in Tel Aviv be reduced to the barest minimum, and all Ghanaians in Israel must maintain close communication with our consular department,” he added.
