Black Starlets head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum says Ghana must remain disciplined and clinical when they face Algeria in their opening match of the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations.

Ghana begin their Group D campaign against the North Africans in what Ogum expects to be a fiercely competitive and tactical encounter.

The former Asante Kotoko coach believes Algeria’s organisation and balance make them a difficult opponent, especially in a tournament opener where both teams will be eager to make a strong start.

“We are expecting a very competitive and tactical game,” Ogum told CAFOnline.

“Algeria are a good side with strong organisation both defensively and offensively. Opening matches are always difficult because every team wants to start well.”

The Black Starlets are aiming to return to the top of youth football on the continent and will hope for a positive result to boost their chances of progressing from a challenging group.

Ogum stressed that concentration and composure could prove decisive in the clash.

“We must remain disciplined, focused and clinical when opportunities come,” he said.

“I believe it will be a good contest between two strong teams.”

Ghana have been drawn alongside Algeria, Senegal and South Africa in Group D, widely regarded as one of the toughest groups in the competition.

Beyond targeting continental success, the Black Starlets are also seeking qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year.
