Vice President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia has made a significant promise to abolish the controversial 10% tax on sports betting and lotteries if elected president in the upcoming 2024 elections.

This commitment is part of a broader strategy aimed at addressing taxation concerns and creating a more favorable fiscal environment for the Ghanaian populace.

In a recent address outlining his vision for the country, Dr. Bawumia unveiled plans to implement new policies in 2025.

These policies are designed to provide the fiscal space necessary to eliminate specific taxes, including the Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity, emissions tax, and the criticized betting tax.

Importantly, Dr. Bawumia assured that these changes would not compromise the deficit target, citing the government’s fiscal performance in surpassing IMF expectations.

The proposed abolition of the betting tax, which has been met with significant opposition, particularly among the youth, reflects Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to creating policies that contribute to the nation’s overall development and well-being.

“Taxes on gambling will be scrapped under my administration. There will be no emissions tax under my administration. 15% tax on electricity will be abolished by 2025 if it’s still on our administration,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“The new policies that I am proposing to implement in 2025 will give us the fiscal space to eliminate some taxes such as the VAT on electricity, the emissions tax and the betting tax without compromising our deficit target,” he added.

This pledge aligns with his broader goal of fostering a more supportive environment for economic growth and prosperity.

Former President John Mahama has also indicated a willingness to review the sports betting tax, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape regarding this contentious issue.

Dr. Bawumia also highlighted the government’s achievements in sports infrastructure, including the completion of six new multi-purpose sports stadiums and ongoing projects in each of the ten old regions.

Additionally, progress has been made with the development of multi-sports facilities at Borteyman for the African Games.

The Vice President emphasized a substantial increase in public astroturf facilities, underscoring the government’s commitment to promoting sports and recreation across the country.
