Nyaho-Tamakloe urges sweeping Black Stars rebuild ahead of 2026 World Cup

Former Ghana Football Association chairman Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has called for a major overhaul of the Black Stars squad as the team prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Despite Ghana’s successful qualification — topping their group with 25 points — the veteran administrator has warned that many of the current players lack the quality required to compete at football’s highest stage.
Nyaho-Tamakloe’s Warning
Speaking to Graphic Sports, he stressed the need for stronger, more competitive options:
“We are going to play at the highest stage of football, and if the country wants to progress, then most of the boys who brought us to where we are today are not good players.”
He urged head coach Otto Addo and his technical team to introduce experienced footballers capable of lifting Ghana beyond the group phase:
“If there are other experienced footballers, we should look for the best that will take us to the World Cup.”
Context
- Ghana missed out on the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, their first absence in over two decades.
- The setback has heightened concerns about the team’s readiness for global competition.
- The World Cup draw will be held on Friday, November 5, when Ghana will discover their group-stage opponents
Implications
Nyaho-Tamakloe’s comments reflect a broader debate within Ghanaian football:
- Should the Black Stars stick with the youthful squad that secured qualification?
- Or should they integrate more seasoned players to balance talent with experience?
This intervention underscores the urgency of Ghana’s preparations, with the World Cup offering both opportunity and risk if the squad is not adequately strengthened.
