Al Ain: After just two games into the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019, Jordan’s Mousa Suleiman Al Tamari is emerging as one of the stars of the tournament, with his game-changing performances helping Vital Borkelmans’ side secure their place in the Round of 16.

The Jordanians have impressed in their opening two matches, notching up wins over defending champions Australia and a Syria side that narrowly missed out on booking a berth at last year’s FIFA World Cup Finals.

Al Tamari has been instrumental in his team’s showing, scoring with an instinctive finish to give Jordan the lead on Thursday against Syria while also playing a key role in his side’s other two goals over the first two match days.

The 21-year-old has delivered the crosses from which Jordan have scored from well-worked set-plays in both games, making him one of the stand-out performers so far of the AFC Asian Cup.

“We’ve made a good start to the Asian Cup with the wins against both Australia and Syria,” said Al Tamaari. “This is good for all the players and the coaching staff. We are working together like one family.

“We want to give the fans in Jordan something to smile about. This has been our target since the start.”

Group B Matchday 2: Jordan vs Syria

Jordan fans have certainly had a lot to celebrate, although they will have to endure the next 90 minutes without Al Tamari after the Cyprus-based star was ruled out of the meeting with Palestine after he picked up his second yellow card of the group phase against the Syrians.

That means he will serve a one-match suspension and will only return to the side for the Round of 16 clash, forcing him to take a short break in what has been a rapid rise for the Amman-born winger.

Al Tamari started his career with Shabab Al Ordon before joining Al Jazeera on loan, only to be snapped up by Nicosea-based APOEL and handed a three-year contract in the summer.

He has impressed since his switch to Cyprus, scoring seven times in his first 11 league games for the club while also providing two assists and he is already attracting attention from elsewhere.

“Now I’m focused on the AFC Asian Cup,” said the APOEL winger, “but some people have talked to me about going to another club. Fiorentina have made an offer and I hope to some day become a world-famous player.”
