Ghana to Repatriate Nearly 700 More Citizens from South Africa This Weekend

Ghana’s evacuation of its nationals from South Africa is gathering pace, with the government set to bring home close to 700 more citizens this weekend in the second phase of its repatriation programme.
Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, confirmed the development during an appearance on JoyPrime News Flash on Wednesday, June 3, saying the exercise is scheduled to take place across Saturday and Sunday.
The latest batch of returnees follows the successful first phase of the evacuation, which saw 300 Ghanaians flown home after widespread reports of intimidation, hostility and attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa prompted many to register for assisted return.
Quarshie acknowledged that the diplomatic mission was unable to arrange accommodation for those awaiting repatriation, but expressed gratitude that the broader Ghanaian community in South Africa rallied to fill the gap.
“We are looking at repatriating nearly 700 people on Saturday and Sunday. While we did not provide accommodation, we are grateful that Ghanaian businesses and churches have stepped in to host them,” he said.
Upon arrival in Ghana, returnees are expected to benefit from support measures put in place by authorities, including temporary relief and reintegration assistance designed to help them get back on their feet.
The government has reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and safety of Ghanaian citizens wherever they may be, and has indicated that efforts to support those affected by the unrest in South Africa will continue for as long as they are needed.
