Mohammed Salisu apologizes after AFCON exit and media clash
Ghanaian centre-back Mohammed Salisu has issued an apology to Ghanaians following the Black Stars’ early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Salisu expressed regret over Ghana’s disappointing campaign and personally apologized for the team’s inability to secure the necessary wins to advance in the tournament.
In a message posted on Instagram, Salisu stated, “It is with the deepest regret that I am writing to you about our disappointing campaign in the 2023 AFCON.
As you all know, we went with the intention of bringing the trophy home, but it was rather unfortunate that we were eliminated from the tournament in the group stage. We gave absolutely everything, but we were unable to secure the necessary wins to keep us in the tournament.”
The four-time African champions suffered a shocking collapse in the final minutes of their match against Mozambique, resulting in a 2-2 draw and their elimination from the competition.
Salisu also addressed an incident where he clashed with the media in the mixed zone after the Mozambique game.
He attributed his actions to frustration and acknowledged the fans’ right to criticize the team but emphasized that insults and threats were unacceptable.
“I want to render an unqualified apology to whoever I offended. We never wanted this result. We will come stronger. Thank you for your tremendous support,” Salisu concluded.
