President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ending illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, insisting that he holds no personal or political interest in the illicit activity.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement with civil society organisations in Accra on Friday, October 3, the President rejected claims that he or members of his government benefit from illegal mining operations.

“We will continue to fight. I believe we will win the fight against galamsey. We have nothing to hide; I don’t gain anything from galamsey. I’m not personally involved in galamsey. I have no interest in galamsey continuing,” Mahama said.

He emphasised the need for a united front in addressing the crisis, assuring stakeholders of continued collaboration between government and civil society in tackling the issue.

“You can be sure that we’re all on the same side. And we will continue to do this together,” he added.

President Mahama’s remarks follow growing pressure from religious bodies, advocacy groups, and local communities urging government to intensify efforts to stop the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining, particularly the contamination of rivers, degradation of farmlands, and deforestation.
