Ghanaian midfielder, Lawrence Agyekum has revealed that he had wanted to score against Nigeria in the Unity Cup to spite his mother who is a Nigerian.
The 21-year old Black Stars midfielder revealed in an interview with 3Sports that he was excited to get a call up for the Unity Cup which was held at the G-Tech Stadium in London from Wednesday, May 28 to Saturday, May 31 2025 then also to have the opportunity to represent the nation against his mother's homeland, Nigeria.
The Cercle Brugge midfielder missed out on featuring for the Black Stars against Nigeria in the fierce "Jollof Derby" encounter - a game he had wanted to feature in to make a dream of playing against his mother's country come true.
In the interview, he noted that he had a dream prior to the game against Nigeria that he had some minutes and scored his maiden Black Stars goal and was against Nigeria, his maternal country.
"I had a dream that I scored my first national goal before the Unity Cup."
"For me, I was looking forward to scoring against Nigeria. My mum is Nigerian so I just wanted to torment her a little bit but it did not happen and then against Trinidad, fortunately for me, I did score and I was really happy the dream came true."
The former WAFA midfielder was among the exciting young talents who graced the Unity Cup in May for the Black Stars and made their mark by showcasing great attitude, breathing into the senior national some novel hope and assured belief in the future.
