Police invade brothel in the La Municipality 19 suspects arrested
The Police in the La Asepe Municipality in Accra on Saturday April 7 2018 launched an invasion on a brothel used by prostitutes in Labadi.
The Police had made the hunt upon receiving complaints from the residents in the area on the negative impact the prostitutes are given back to the community.
In the the process of combing the area of the activities, 19 prostitutes were arrested. They included 14 Nigerian ladies and 5 Ghanaians.
The residents of the community said the landlords who rent out the houses to the prostitutes do not take into consideration the negative impact their acts is causing to the youth of the area.
One of the residents said that the landlords charge the prostitutes an amount of GHC 50, which seem to them like a good deal and therefore do not care how their properties are used.
“The said landlords involved are only focusing on the financial gains without consideration for other members of society”, the resident said.
The Labadi District Police Crime Officer, ASP Richard Daplah said the exercise was carried out on Sunday at around 9pm.
He said the prostitutes charge their customers between GHC 10 and GHC 50 for before offering them sex, an act they consider as their occupation.
Mr Daplah added that their activities begin after 6pm when the sun is set. They wear revealing clothes to catch attention of the customers they render their services to.
One of the residents said that, the sex trade the prostitutes offer in the community has driven their daughters into the act.
Lydia Tetteh said, “Because these prostitutes have money pay GH¢50 as rent per day most of our landlords are ejecting us our husbands are also leaving us due to the activities of the prostitutes.”
James Kwodjo Nmai, one of the landlords said upon being invited for interrogations said that they have been renting the houses to Madams, these Madams act as middle men between the prostitutes and the landlords.
Upon acquiring the rooms, they also rent it out to the prostitutes.
He told the police that, where there are harlots, there is always peace in such environments.
He said, “These prostitutes have been living among us for the past 50 years and we believe that any area where there are harlots, there is always peace”.
Some of the prostitutes managed to escape form the police at the time the arrest was being made.
A thirty year old man was also part of the prostitutes who were arrested, he was having sex with one of his clients.
The suspects are being processed for court.
