Tensions escalated during the parliamentary rerun in Ablekuma North on Friday, July 11, as a group of unidentified individuals believed to be “macho men” stormed a polling station, causing major disruptions and chaos.

According to Channel One News reporter Jude Duncan, Nana Akua Afriyie, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, was physically attacked during the incident.

Eyewitnesses described how the men arrived in an organised fashion, sending voters and electoral officials into a state of panic. Their presence led to confusion and prompted a temporary suspension of voting as security forces intervened to restore order.

Despite the heightened security presence at the polling stations, the police were unable to maintain control of the situation.

The rerun, held across 19 polling stations, was initiated by the Electoral Commission (EC) to settle a long-standing electoral dispute following the December 7, 2024, general elections. The exercise seeks to restore parliamentary representation to the constituency, which has been without an MP since last year.

The political climate remains tense, with the NPP officially boycotting the rerun. However, Nana Akua Afriyie has defied the party’s directive, choosing to participate in the contest.
